What is free, what Pro adds, which instruments are covered, and what Clave does not do yet. If a question is missing, email clavesupport@gr8tool.com.
Is Clave free?
Yes. The free download is a complete metronome and a complete chromatic tuner, not a demo. You get the tempo dial, the common meters plus a no-accent mode, six rhythm patterns, tap tempo, the beat lamps, screen flash and haptics.
Clave Pro is a one-time purchase. It adds the advanced metronome panel with four subdivision volume layers, the rhythm editor, presets, the practice log, widgets, Live Activity, the Apple Watch app, and the instrument-aware tuner features: 30+ instruments, 30 preset tunings, seven temperaments, transposition, capo, string-by-string guidance and custom tunings.
Is there a subscription?
No. Clave Pro is a one-time purchase and is included in Family Sharing. There is no recurring charge, no advertising and no account.
Which instruments does the tuner support?
The Pro tuner covers more than 30 instruments, including guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin, banjo; violin, viola, cello and double bass; flute, oboe, English horn, bassoon, clarinet and saxophone; trumpet, cornet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba; and folk instruments.
It includes 30 preset tunings, custom string sets you can name and keep, seven temperaments, transposition, a capo offset, per-string cent offsets for sweetened tunings, and string-by-string guidance with a reference tone.
Does the Apple Watch app cost extra?
No. The Apple Watch app is included in Clave Pro and uses the same purchase. If it shows locked, open the iPhone app once with the same Apple ID, then use Restore Purchase on the Watch.
Does Clave work offline?
Yes. The metronome, tuner, practice log, presets, widgets and Watch app work on-device. The only network-dependent actions are the App Store purchase and the optional iCloud sync you turn on yourself.
What data does Clave collect?
None. There is no account, no analytics, no tracking, no advertising and no third-party SDK. The microphone is used only while the tuner is listening; audio is analysed on-device and is not recorded or sent. The camera is used only to control the flashlight beat lamp.
Optional iCloud sync stores your practice record, presets, custom tunings and custom temperament in your own private iCloud. The developer has no server and cannot read it. Sync is off until you turn it on. See the privacy policy for the full detail.
What are the system requirements?
Clave requires an iPhone or iPad on iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. The Apple Watch app requires watchOS 10 or later and a paired iPhone. The iPhone and iPad app is universal.
Can I use a capo, a transposing instrument or a custom tuning?
Yes, in Clave Pro. It supports a capo offset, transposition for transposing instruments, custom string sets you can name and keep, per-string cent offsets for sweetened tunings, and seven temperaments: equal, just intonation, Pythagorean, quarter-comma meantone, Werckmeister III, Vallotti and your own.
Does Clave support odd meters or polyrhythms?
Not in version 1.0. The current metronome covers common single meters up to nine beats per bar, with a no-accent option on the Pro panel, four independent subdivision layers, accents, swing and a rhythm editor. 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 12/8 and polyrhythms are not part of this release.
We would rather say that plainly than let you buy it expecting something it does not do. If odd meters or polyrhythms are essential to your practice today, a different tool may fit better for now. The comparison page explains the trade-offs.
Does it have a practice log and widgets?
Yes, in Clave Pro. It records practice time, streaks and levels; home and lock screen widgets and a Live Activity show your progress. The free version still keeps the log in the background, so unlocking Pro reveals the history you have already built.
How do I restore a purchase?
Open Clave, tap the gear to open Settings, then tap Restore Purchase. Use the same Apple ID that bought Clave Pro. If you use Family Sharing, ask the organizer to confirm sharing is on. The Watch app also has a Restore Purchase button.
What languages are supported?
Ten: English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish. The interface, widgets and Watch app are localized.
Is there a free trial?
No timed trial. The free app is a complete metronome and chromatic tuner. You can open the Pro panel and try its controls, but the engine keys are locked until you buy Clave Pro. That way you can see the panel before paying, without a countdown.
How is Clave different from TonalEnergy, Pro Metronome or Soundbrenner?
Clave is built around a hardware-style practice instrument: a metronome with four independent subdivision volume layers and an instrument-aware tuner in the same app, with a one-time purchase and no account.
TonalEnergy is a deep all-in-one practice suite. Pro Metronome is a flexible metronome with polyrhythms and MIDI/Ableton Link. Soundbrenner is built around a practice tracker, subscription and wearable hardware. The comparison page goes through the trade-offs honestly.
Can I use it on stage?
Yes. The metronome is scheduled on the audio hardware clock, with background play, Live Activity, widgets and a Watch app. There is no setlist or MIDI/Ableton Link in 1.0; if those are essential, a different tool may fit better today.
Still deciding?
Start with the free instrument.
The free version is a complete metronome and chromatic tuner. Try it on a real practice session before you decide whether Pro is worth it.
